Chicory Seeds ‘Totem’
Excellent forcing variety of chicory that’s compact and has a great flavour. Add to salads, steamed or braised with olive oil. Delicious!
Sowing outdoors
Create a 2cm (3/4 in) deep row in the soil. Water the row well before sowing. Sow seeds thinly in the row and cover the seeds with a thin layer of soil. Keep soil moist until seedlings are established. When seedlings produce a head of leaves thin to plants at 20cm (8in) apart.
Growing on
Keep crops regularly well-watered.
Forcing for sweet and succulent white-leaf crops.
Lift plants in October or November, cutting off the leaves to leave a 2.5cm (1 in) stump. Place five stumps upright in a 20cm (8in) pot. Pack moist soil or sand around the roots. Place in full darkness around 12°C (55°F). Remove plants in two to three weeks and your chicory plants will be tender, succulent and white-green.
