Dwarf French bean ‘Modesto’ produces a good crop of long, straight green beans on compact, bushy plants through summer. This white-flowered variety is ideal for pots and small vegetable plots.
Sow indoors
April-May: Sow individually 5cm (2in) deep in clean pots or modules of compost. Water well. Keep warm.
Sow outdoors
May-June: Sow direct into the required harvest position, 5cm (2in) deep, 10cm (4in) apart. Allow 30cm (12in) between rows. Keep soil moist at all times.
Plant out
May-June: Plant out 10cm (4in) apart. Allow 30cm (12in) between rows.
Tips
Water generously. Pick young beans regularly for best flavour and longest cropping period.
