Raspberry ‘Cascade Delight’ – 5 Canes
- An early floricane with long fruitbearing laterals, vigorous growth and a good reliable crop of large, conical fruit with sweet red flesh, means this is a good garden variety.
At planting cut stems down to 5cm (2in) from soil level. In the first year allow your raspberry plants to put up leafy growth to form strong plants. In the second year you’ll get delicious sun-ripened raspberries to pick from from strong plants.
Floricane (summer-fruiting) varieties fruit on canes produced in the previous year. After fruiting, cut out the old, fruited wood in autumn/winter and tie in the new growths to the support.
How you will receive your plants:
Your bare root raspberry canes will arrive at the perfect time for planting. Unpack them immediately and aim to plant as soon as possible after delivery.
Can’t plant straight away?Â
If you can’t plant right away, keep the canes in their packaging in a cool, dark place. It’s best to plant within seven days for optimal growth.
Planting tips and hints:
Before planting, soak the roots in water for about an hour to rehydrate them.
Planting in containers: If frost is still a risk, pot up the raspberry canes in large containers filled with multipurpose compost. Water well, and keep them in a greenhouse or cold frame until spring. Once the frost has passed, harden them off before planting outside.
Planting in the ground: Once the soil has warmed up in spring, you can plant your raspberry canes directly into the ground. Dig a hole wide enough to allow the roots to spread out. Place the cane so the roots fan out naturally, and ensure the crown (where the stems meet the roots) is level with the soil surface. Backfill, firm down the soil, and water well to settle the roots.
Feeding and aftercare: Keep the area around your raspberry canes weed-free. Apply a slow-release fertiliser in spring and mulch with well-rotted compost or manure to retain moisture and boost growth. Ensure your canes are supported by a trellis or framework, and water regularly in dry spells.
