Can’t plant straight away?
If you can’t plant your rhubarb crowns straight away, store them in a cool place and keep the roots moist. We recommend you plant your crowns as soon as possible, within a couple of days of receiving them.
Planting tips and hints:
Planting in containers: We recommend you grow your rhubarb crowns on in a pot for around a month before planting out. Plant in a large pot of compost with the growing point level with the top of the compost. Water regularly but avoid waterlogging.
Planting in the ground: Plant the crown so that the top is just visible above the surface of the soil, with the roots spread out. Space crowns around 75-90cm apart. Water well after planting.
Aftercare: Water well during dry periods and feed in summer with a general purpose fertiliser. Don’t harvest any stems in the first year, and only a few stems in the second year. After the second year, harvest as needed, stopping in July to allow the plant to build up reserves for the following year.
