One of the best runner beans you’ll ever eat, Runner Bean ‘White Lady’ produces a bumper crop of long smooth succulent pods, stringless when young. This RHS AGM variety sets well even in hot summers, and the pretty white flowers are less prone to bird attack than red-flowered beans. Pick the pods when young and tender for the best flavour.
Sow indoors
Sow individually in clean pots or modules of compost 5cm (2in) deep. Water well.
Plant out
Plant out indoor raised crops in June 20cm (8in) apart in double rows 20cm (8in) apart next to a support. Leave 45cm (18in) between each double row or plant round a wigwam of canes once all risk of frost has passed.
Sow outdoors
Sow outdoors direct into the required harvest position (next to a cane support) 5cm (2in) deep 20cm (8in) apart in double rows 20cm (8in) apart. Leave 45cm (18in) between each double row or plant round a wigwam of canes. Keep soil moist at all times
